I have been meaning to read one of Angelou's books for years, and was quite pleased when our book club chose this. This is a very candid memoir about growing up in mid 20th century America. Although Angelou endured a lot as a child (being sent to live with her grandmother when she was 5, being raped by her mother's boyfriend at 8 and a whole host of other injustices suffered by many African.Americans at the time), there is no self-pity here. I really appreciated her vivid descriptions of people and places. I felt as if I knew the main characters personally by the end of the book. This may have been the first full book I read by Ms. Angelou, but it won't be my last.

As a German university student I've been introduced to the American South via a class. Amazon recommended Maya Angelou to me and I bought the book since it sounded interesting. And it was! For all lazy review readers, just some adjectives:-interesting-well-written-poetic-informative-warm-hearted-inspiringReading the book I got the impression that Maya Angelou is a smart woman, book- and street-wise.The book itself has a pretty cover, a good print and good paper.

Über Angelou's Werk wurde schon genug gesprochen, weshalb ich nur sagen kann, dass dieses Buch, wenn es auch seine Längen haben mag, mit Abstand eines der stärksten Bücher ist, die ich je gelesen habe.

I read all Maya Angelou's books (most of them MANY years ago). This is an autobiography of the author's childhood - southern USA.The author died this year (2014) and I bought this for my husband.He liked it and asked me to get more of her work for him. Of course I will read the books again, also. Lovely, simple prose.

Very difficult to read for me as a foreigner. But I definitly love her personality. She has a very intersting story.

Es ist ein hervorragend und authentisch geschriebenes Buch. Mir wurde bewusst, vor allem emotional, was es bedeutet, als "negroe" (sie verwendet dieses Wort hÃ¤ufig), in den U.S.A. aufzuwachsen.
